“Death, Taxes and Change…the only things guaranteed in life (and a sale at Carpetright!)”

I met with Brian this week, he runs a £2.3m turn-over company near Diss and like many Entrepreneurs, he’s pretty close to ‘burn out’.

Brian is 56 and started his service-based business in 1996. Things were very different then, but of course business and life change. What used to work, now for no particular reason doesn’t. Business needs and goals have changed. His team has grown and his industry and customer requirements have changed.

Well that’s he perceived…

When he first started the business he had a clear vision, destination and journey all mapped out. In the first 12 years he grew it from zero to £2m, from 3 to 15 people. He even managed good growth through the turbulent noughties.

Within an hour of us sitting down and looking at his role and the business, he soon recognised the biggest thing that had changed was…HIM!

Without realising it, he had got sucked into the day-to-day running of his business. Each week started with a great To-Do list and then ‘blink’…it was Friday with hardly anything ticked off. He’d spent the week fighting fires dealing with everyone’s problems believing only he can deal with them.

So What’s Brian Going To Do Next?

Over the next few weeks I’m going to enable Brian to get back on top of his business, ‘get the dog wagging the tail again’ as he put it.

Working together we’ll re-evaluate his destination and the route he needs to take. We’ll look at his personal and business goals to get him back on track and falling back in love with his business.

Is The Tail Wagging The Dog In Your Business?

When was the last time you re-evaluated your destination?

You’ve got a three day weekend, so grab 30 minutes to review (or write) your personal & business plan:

1. Write down your personal goals?
What do you want to achieve?
When do you want to achieve them?
What’s stopping you achieving them?
What actions do you need to take to achieve them?

2. Write down the goals of the business?
What do you want to achieve?
When do you want to achieve them?
What’s stopping you achieving them?
What actions do you need to take to achieve them?

For your personal plan, share this with someone close to you. By doing so these become more real and tangible. Discuss how they could hold you accountable to achieve your goals and get stuff done.

Next week share your business goals and plans with members of your team who you trust to sense check and bounce off any ideas. Discuss how you can deliver the required actions, plan regular updates to hold each other accountable.

If that doesn’t work for you, why not email them to me and we can jump on a call to review, I’m always happy to help…

Until next week…have a great weekend
