Better Never Stops - Direction
When you first started the business you had a clear vision, destination and journey mapped out. You may have even had it all written down and occasionally you went back to it. There’s a very high chance now that you haven’t looked at it for quite a while.

“What’s happened now is you’ve got sucked into the day-to-day running of your business.”

You’ve got a To-Do list somewhere with a heap of great things listed down. Each weekend you decide, “right next week I’m going to get some of those important items ticked off my list”. You get to work on Monday, you get sucked into the vacuum fire fighting everyone’s problems because only you know how to and then its Saturday. Another week gone by.
Without realising it you and your business have changed a lot. You’ve lost sight of why you started this business and what you want out of it. And if you don’t know, how do you expect your team to know. Everything we do in life is based on these two questions: why are we doing it and what do we expect the result to be? From waking up to going to sleep we ask these questions.
Why is this a mistake?

Over a period of time business and life change. What used to work, now for no particular reason it doesn’t. Business needs and goals change. New people join the team. Industry and customer requirements change.

Action...

You and your business need a clear sight of where you’re heading, the route you need to take and what you need to do to arrive at your destination.

– A – : Write down your personal goals

  1. What do you want to achieve?
  2. When do you want to achieve them?
  3. What’s stopping you achieving them?
  4. What actions do you need to take to achieve them?

– B – : Write down the goals of the business

  1. What do you want to achieve?
  2. When do you want to achieve them?
  3. What’s stopping you achieving them?
  4. What actions do you need to take to achieve them?
For your personal plan, share this with someone close to you. By doing so these become more real and tangible. Discuss how they could hold you accountable to achieve your goals and get stuff done.
For your business goals share your plans members of your team who you trust to sense check and bounce off any ideas. Discuss how you can deliver the required actions, plan regular updates to hold each other accountable.

So, what do you do now?

If you’ve read this far, you’re clearly not happy with your business. As I see it you now have 3 choices:

.

]

Choice 1

Do nothing! And surprisingly many won’t do anything different. They’ll carry on seeking for the magic wand! Or better still bury their head in sand in a vain hope something will happen.

One of my clients and now good friends, Adrian, has a great saying (he’s from Yorkshire, so it’s even better in his accent!):

“Only s**t happens, everything else you have to make happen yourself!”

Choice 2

Take action by implementing some or all the actions above.

Great stuff and good luck, you’ll be well on your way to very quickly having a much easier business to manage, you’ll feel rejuvenated and start to really enjoy your business again.
